Tonight I was honored to attend the 16th Annual Hispanic College Fund Portraits of Success Gala.  The pictures aren’t even up yet but I thought it important to share my thoughts immediately.  The fund is making a major, positive difference in the lives of the largest growing demographic in our economy.

Organizations like Ford, Ernst & Young, General Dynamics, Kaiser Permanente, Lockheed Martin, MasterCard and Google are taking notice and have become sponsors.  Should your organization?  Take a look at the brief video below before you make your decision:

ALPFA_logo.gifLast night I had the opportunity to facilitate a panel on mentoring. The title “Mentor” conjurs up multiple definitions but our panelists last night took the opportunity to go through almost every one of them.

The event was sponsored by Beers + Cutler and hosted by the Latino professional association ALPFA (DC Chapter) and the National Association of Black Accountants NABA (Metro DC).  The distinguish panel I had the opportunity to facilitate included:

Yelinne Megally, Manager, Beers & Cutler
Everett Vance, Director, PricewaterhouseCoopers
Mike Norris, VP, Scheer Partners
Chip Jordan, SVP and Head of Corp. Tax @ Marriott International, Inc.

The event was attended by over 50 members from the associations and organizations and was held in Vienna, VA.

Take an Internet lesson
from big companies.
Don’t do it their way.

How come the smartest people in the world (CEOs, sales VPs, and Marketing VPs) are so stupid when it comes to treating their customers like kings and queens online? And how “online smart” are you?

OPPORTUNITY: Because the business model of big business leaves out “ease of doing business and ease of customer contact,” or the people building their site are customer unconscious, or the people who work in the company have never been their own customer to test the process, or they’re so busy working on their stock price and squeezing profit nickels – they forget that at some point, long-term revenue from loyal customers will determine success.

And then they wonder, “what’s wrong,” or why people don’t return or create the positive virus they were hoping for. Hello!  MORE..

Below are some powerful thoughts by Jeff Gordinier.  Generation X is poised to make an impact in today’s society, including this economy.  Will we answer the call?  What do you think?

Patriotic Development includes physical fitness because it translates; in this case to “across the aisle” cooperation.  Read the article below by Andie Coller of Politico Magazine:

It was Paul Ryan’s abs that sold Kevin Brady.   “When I saw Paul Ryan — man, he’s gotten in great shape. He doesn’t have a six-pack; he’s got, like, a 12-pack,” Brady, a Texas Republican, says of his fellow GOP-er, who hails from Wisconsin.  “And Heath Shuler said he was in the best shape he’d been since his football days,” Brady adds, referring to the North Carolina Democrat’s stretch as a quarterback in the National Football League, “and I was really impressed with that.”

Inspired by Ryan’s rock-hard core and Shuler’s gridiron-ready condition, Brady has joined the growing legion of legislators who have shelled out three easy payments of $39.95 (plus shipping and handling) for the privilege of pushing their limits with the P90X workout, a 12-disc home boot camp routine that has become something of a craze on Capitol Hill.  MORE…

spotlight-friends-affect-weightForget the old saying “You are what you eat.” These days, the theory is that you are, instead, what your friends eat. A whole raft of research has looked at the effect that our loved ones’ diet and exercise habits have on our own health.

One long-term study of 12,000 adults found that a person’s chances of becoming obese increased by about 40% if a spouse or sibling became obese–and jumped as high as 170% if a close friend became obese.   More…

Tonight I had the opportunity to listen to the Inspector General of the Government Accountability Office (GAO), Ms. Frances Garcia.  If you Google her name you will notice she was Hispanic Business Magazine‘s 2009 Women of the year.  Ms. Garcia was speaking to a group of George Washington University business students about their futures.

Afterwards I had an opportunity to speak with a sophomore student named Alix (yes, with an “i”).  He got me thinking about what a student or entry level professional can do to get experience with other professionals, without having much tenure in the office.  Here’s a list of things we discussed:

  • Read about new businesses in your area.  For DC, try the Washington Business Journal
  • Start connecting on LinkedIn
  • If you’re in school, keep your grades up
  • Get involved with organizations you believe in (school sponsored, or professional i.e. Toastmasters)

Washington, DCThe key is to be honest with what you have to offer.  Most people early in their career can offer fresh perspectives built up on research of past and current business events.  Start connecting now and by the time you are a mid-level professional you will be well prepared to help other junior professionals.

Cheers!
