Institutional reach

When a family needs the largest institutions, we bring them in

Some situations call for capabilities no independent firm holds on its own — international holdings, complex custody, a tax question that spans jurisdictions. We convene them as part of your team rather than handing you off.

Why an independent firm reaches outward

The trade a family usually believes it is making is between the breadth of a large institution and the attention of a small one. Most of the time that trade is real. The way around it is not to claim expertise in everything, but to be the firm that convenes it — an independent bench of specialists for the recurring work, and institutional relationships for the situations that genuinely exceed what any independent practice holds.

The distinction that matters is who keeps the relationship. Being handed to an institution’s own advisory arm means starting over with someone who does not know the family. Bringing a capability into an existing engagement means the plan, the governance work, and the person who understands both stay where they are.

  • Global banking and custody

Families with holdings, property, or beneficiaries outside the United States run into custody and cross-border banking questions no independent firm settles alone. We bring a global banking relationship into the engagement rather than referring the family out of it.

  • Institutional asset management

Access to institutional portfolio construction, risk analytics, and asset classes that were once available only through a large private bank — used inside a portfolio we still manage, on an open-architecture basis, with no obligation to hold any particular manager's product.

  • Family and private wealth advisory

Multi-jurisdictional tax positions, entity structures, and the reporting that follows a substantial liquidity event sit beyond what a regional CPA practice is typically staffed for. A professional services relationship covers that work when a family's situation calls for it.

Two layers, doing different work

The advisory bench handles the recurring disciplines around a family — independent legal, tax, trust, insurance, banking, and family-dynamics professionals. They are independent third parties, and the firm receives no commissions or referral compensation from any of them.

Institutional relationships sit above that, and are used far less often. They exist for the specific situations — cross-border holdings, institutional asset classes, multi-jurisdictional tax — where the bench itself is not the right tool.

The compensation question

A firm that is paid by the people it introduces you to has a reason to introduce you to particular people. Jason Howell Company accepts no commissions, referral fees, or other compensation from any specialist or institution described on this site, and is compensated by its clients only.

That arrangement, and the conflicts that do exist, are described in the firm’s disclosure documents.

Common questions

What is an institutional relationship in wealth management?

It is a working arrangement that gives an independent advisory firm access to capabilities normally held inside a large institution — global custody, institutional asset management, or multi-jurisdictional tax advisory. The family stays with their own adviser; the institution supplies a specific capability into that engagement rather than taking the relationship over.

Does this mean my money is held somewhere else?

Custody and advice are separate questions. Assets are held at a qualified custodian in the client's own name in either case, and an institutional relationship changes which capabilities can be brought to a situation, not who the adviser is or where accounts sit.

Is Jason Howell Company paid for these introductions?

No. The firm acts as a fiduciary and is compensated by its clients. It receives no commissions, referral fees, or other compensation from the independent specialists or the institutions described here, and no institution is obligated to be used in any engagement.
