Mission statements earn their reputation for being vague when they are written by one person and circulated for approval. They become useful when every family member has been interviewed first and can point to their own contribution in the final text.
The practical test is whether it helps resolve an actual disagreement. A statement that everyone agrees with but that settles nothing is decoration.
