What is generational wealth transfer?

Generational wealth transfer is the movement of assets from one generation to the next, through lifetime gifts, trusts, or an estate. The mechanics are a legal and tax question; whether the transfer succeeds in the way the family intended is largely a governance question.

The technical work — titling, beneficiary designations, trust funding, gift and estate tax planning — is necessary and well understood. What it does not address is whether the recipients are prepared, whether they understand the reasoning, or whether the family agrees on what the wealth is for.

Families who treat these as one problem rather than two tend to find the documents and the intentions still match a decade later.
